Campground internet connections

Postby ces18 » Sat Aug 15, 2009 4:22 pm

Now that I have my new laptop Jorge wants it to come camping so we can monitor the weather while we are out. How easy is it to get a wifi connection in most parks? I know private campgrounds offer it as part of the deal, but how about COE and NPS or ones we usually frequent.

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Celest

I have not had much luck with the wifi at the coe's or the state parks. when you think about it they are mostly out away from everything so if they don't offer wifi (which they don't) your not going to get a connection.

camp uses a Verizon plug in card which can get an internet connection most everywhere but it is not cheap

We have an inexpensive AM/FM radio from Radio Shack that has the weather channel. That's how we monitor the weather.

We have a portable weather alert thingy. Beeps if the inside of the trailer falls below 32. :o and then issues warnings. We bought at REI I think. Not very big, runs on batteries. About the size of cordless phone.

PS - but it offers no pretty pictures of the weather. :(

I don't get it-I go camping to get away from all the daily trappings, and you guys want
to take it with you??? So what would be the point? Rancar has a good idea-inexpensive
batt-op radio to catch local wx reports in unfamiliar locales. Last spring I bought one
that also has a flashlight. Sometimes I'll get bored and turn it on just to have something
to listen to. As far as weather goes, I'm already familiar with thw weather patterns of
the places I go, plus I usually watch the tv reports before I go so I'll have an Idea before
I get there

We haven't found one COE or NSP that has wifi. Some of the private ones do but only about half have strong enough signals to reach the units away from their offices. :( Sometimes you have to find a place to sit near their offices to get a decent signal. Use a booster. They do help.

We thought we'd try to bring along the laptop to keep from having to buy yet one more gadget. Probably will have to get a cheap weather radio, though. Especially since we seem to attract the worst possible weather when we go out :?
