Blowing a fuse

Postby ces18 » Wed Apr 08, 2009 3:01 pm

We got the bunk end light/fan combos for each of our bunks. When we plug in the one at the front of the camper it blows the fuse. We've tried making sure everything on the same circuit was unplugged before trying it but it doesn't matter. As soon as the jack touches the plug *zap*. We then have to change the fuse. It's a 15 amp fuse and we've considered trying a 20 amp one there, but I know that isn't a good idea. Any suggestions?

Ces.... Try plugging in something else and if it still blows there could be a staple or something shorting out the plug. It it don't blow I would check the light/fan wireing. With the fuse blowing that fast it sounds like a DEAD short.
Good Luck.....

Can't plug anything else in that particular thing....it is a jack plug, not the two prong one like you normally have. The fan plug for mine and Jorge's bed is on the same circuit and I don't have problems when I plug it in. Also don't blow the fuse when we use the regular plugs on that circuit for the coffee maker.

But, I might go out there and check one of the other fans. Good suggestion that it might be the actual fan wiring.

Ah OK.. then it's 12 volt. We had a problem in Kitty with a fuse blowing and they found that when they made her some one put a staple through one of the wires that lead to the 12 volt light. I would not change it to a 20 amp because the wire its self is not big enough to handle the extra load.

I am 99% sure there is a dead short either in the light/fan or the plug/wireing...

Hmmm. I tried all three fans in there and it didn't blow anything. I even turned on other lights from that circuit while the fan was on and nothing happened. I wonder if she is trying to plug it in while it is already on and that is blowng it. Curiouser and curiouser.

It sounds like the light itself. Try and take the light apart and make sure there is no hot wire touching any metal or the ground wire and let me know.
